Denominazione di Origine Protetta
The original San Marzano tomatoes come from the province of Campania in the south of Italy near Naples. The tomatoes have a protected designation of origin, or Denominazione di Origine Protetta (DOP). You can recognize these products by the DOP logo on the packaging (see photo). The real San Marzano tomatoes from Campania can only be bought canned and in the form of peeled tomatoes (pomodori pellati).
